From the VR archives
VR is by no means a new technology. Though today the equipment may be available on such a broad scale for the first time, artists were using this medium decades ago. Sound engineer Dorota Błaszczak worked at Canada’s Banff Centre for the Arts in the 1990s, where artists created a dozen or so projects exploring virtual reality. Soon after, Osmose and Ephémère, Char Davies’ virtual environments, were created in Montreal. What did artists’ explorations of the medium look like at that time? How did the concepts of using VR and presenting works emerge? What has happened to them over the past twenty- something years?
