APPARATUM

APPARATUM – an interactive installation recalling the heritage of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio, created by the panGenerator group and commissioned by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the Independent Programme. The installation's spatial form is inspired by the aesthetics of the famous "Black Room" (the Studio's headquarters) designed by Oskar Hansen. Its minimalism and distinctive technical solutions refer directly to Hansen's idea and the unique aesthetics of the equipment used to create electroacoustic music back then. In terms of function and sound, the structure draws from the works of one of PRES's composers – Bogusław Schaeffer and his Electronic Symphony. The distinctive element of this composition was the use of graphic notation by the composer, in which each symbol was assigned individual sounds and suggestions for the sound producer. PanGenerator took Schaeffer's original idea as its starting point and translated it into an interactive form, allowing anyone to compose their own electroacoustic work using and intuitive touch interface. Symbols referring to Schaeffer's original idea, arranged as part of an interactive graphic score, are transformed into instructions controlling the electromechanical, completely analogue sound generators. These generators use the key medium used in the Studio – magnetic tapes – as well as solutions that allow for analogue sound generation by means of moving optical elements. By combining a digital interface with the analogue nature of the sound generating devices, it has become possible to create a modern and accessible way to present the atmosphere and overarching idea of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio to a wider audience.
